SLFI is proud to launch the very first Certificate program on Mindfulness in Sri Lanka. This pioneering course will lay a strong foundation on the practice of the techniques of Mindfulness and their relationship to modern scientific theory. The course will empower the participants to have a more fulfilling life. It will also be an added qualification to be a Counselling Professional.
Mindfulnessas a science and practice has been well established in the Western world for well over two decades. The practice of mindfulness is widely used in education, health, sports and by organizations both private and governments to enhance the overall productivity and health related outcomes. There are thousands of research studies conducted globally on the effectiveness of mindfulness.
Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. As we become more aware of our thoughts and emotions in the moment they arise, we begin to create the freedom to choose how we respond to difficulty, instead of being driven mindlessly by our conditioning and habits. Over time, this releases us from stress, from our past and from the stuck thinking that inhibits the natural flow of creativity, happiness and gratitude in life.
There’s growing research showing that when we train our brains to be mindful, we begin to re-mold the very physical structure of our brains - to the better!
The four months long Certificate course of Practical MindfulnessTM will cover important new areas such as the problems of un-mindfulness, what is mindfulness, research on mindfulness, techniques for developing mindfulness, mindful stress reduction, managing emotions, cultivating self-compassion and emotional health, improving work and study performance, mindfulness in memory, mindful communication, mindful relationships and empathy, mindfulness and heartfulness and mindfulness as a way of life.
‘Choose Life’ creative collection, the book aimed at increasing public awareness on suicide prevention, a publication of the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute was launched on 10th September 2018, at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.
The book comprises a collection of short stories, poems and prose written in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages, selected by a panel of experts, from the responses the SLFI received from all over the island for the choose life Suicide Prevention Awareness Programme organised to mark the world suicide prevention day 2018.
The collection would be an ideal reader for those who yearn for a faint glimmer of light, even in what seems to be the darkest hour.

Certificate Course in Practical Mindfulness
‘SMART Mind Transformation’
1st intake - January 2019
Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.
Whenever you bring awareness to what you’re directly experiencing via your senses, or to your state of mind via your thoughts and emotions, you’re being mindful. And there’s growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you’re re-modelling the physical structure of your brain.
As you become more aware of your thoughts and emotions in the moment they arise, you begin to create the freedom to choose how you respond to difficulty, instead of being driven mindlessly by your conditioning and habits. Over time, this releases you from stress, from your past and from the stuck thinking that inhibits the natural flow of creativity, happiness and gratitude in life. Practicing mindfulness increases your cognitive and emotional resilience so when you are knocked off balance, you can return to a state of inner calm more quickly and easily. Your natural empathy is deepened, you can communicate more effectively and self-regulate more easily. This in turn allows you to feel calmer, happier, clearer, more connected and grateful.
In a world where technology, environmental concerns and fear are overwhelming us, we need to know that we have the internal resources to deal with all that life throws our way. Senior Attorney Mr. Sarrath Kongahage, Chairman, Sri Lanka Foundation
It is with great pleasure that I send this message of greetings to the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute(SLFI).
I am happy that the SLFI, which is an institute under the purview of the Presidential Secretariat commenced 43 years ago, is forging ahead maintaining its traditions and good work in the areas of democracy, human rights and good governance for the benefit of the people in this country.
I also note that under the guidance of its present leadership the entire staff is not only carrying on the exemplary work commenced by its predecessors, but also venturing into new areas to broaden its worthy services.
The efforts taken by the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute at present to upgrade its activities in keeping with the 21st century global educational trends is highly laudable.
I am confident that the SLFI would continue to further the goals of the Institute, especially in the areas of democracy, human rights and good governance. I wish the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute every success in all its future endeavours.
